Semporna Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum sentenced the man, Amir Kahal, on Oct. 7, and he will be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his term, The Star reported. The Malaysian daily described him as an illegal immigrant.
Amir trespassed into the 25-year-old's room at the resort in Semporna, in Sabah state, at around 3 a.m. on Sept. 19 while she was sleeping alone. "The suspect allegedly held her hand and removed part of her clothing before a struggle ensued," Tan said in a statement the next day.
She escaped and hid in nearby bushes until a resort worker found her that morning, and told police the man pulled her hair as she fled, causing her to fall. Officers arrested Amir at the resort at around 8 p.m. the same day.
The woman, identified in Chinese media only by her surname, Huang, told Chinese news outlet Cover News that the man was one of two security guards patrolling the resort that night. She said he switched off the light, stood by her bed and warned her not to make a sound before grabbing her hands and pulling off her clothes.
