The discovery began in 2023 when Nguyen Van Uy of Jungle Boss Tours and Kevin Ditamore of the National Speleological Society spotted a mysterious black spot on Google Earth. Located in the remote Cha Noi - Khe Gat area, the site is buried deep within the core zone of the UNESCO-listed Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.
Early attempts to verify the site failed because drones could not clear the surrounding 500-meter peaks. However, in early 2025, the team returned with high-altitude drones capable of reaching 1,000 meters. These successful surveys confirmed the existence of a massive 2-hectare sinkhole, marking a major milestone for speleology and adventure tourism in the region.
Phong Nha - Ke Bang continues to solidify its reputation as the 'Cave Kingdom' of the world.
